On a fantastic three-day journey from Marrakech to the Merzouga Desert, you will discover the splendor of southern Morocco, its expansive landscapes, and its rich cultural heritage. Experience the famous Sahara Desert, travel through the High Atlas Mountains, and stop by historic Berber communities. You’ll spend one night in the breathtaking Dades Valley and another beneath the Sahara Desert’s starry skies, encircled by the well-known Erg Chebbi dunes.
Take in the stunning scenery and traditional Berber settlements as you begin your tour with a leisurely drive into the High Atlas Mountains. The first place you should see is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Ben Haddou, an old fortification that has appeared in several Hollywood productions, including as Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator. Before arriving at the Dades Valley, continue your drive through the colorful oases of Skoura and Mgouna, which are well-known for their roses. You’ll get the ideal chance to unwind and enjoy the natural beauty while spending a tranquil night amid striking gorges.
The path passes through the breathtaking Todra Gorges on the second day, where imposing cliffs rise on either side, producing a breathtaking view. Before arriving to Merzouga, the entrance to the Sahara Desert, continue your journey via charming Berber communities. Here, as the sun sets over the desert, you will embark on a once-in-a-lifetime camel ride across the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi. After a delectable Moroccan meal, you may enjoy music and dancing beneath the stars at a typical desert camp.
Get up early on the last day to see the magnificent sunrise over the dunes. Return to your tent on camels after a filling breakfast, then start the journey back to Marrakech. You will go via the picturesque town of Midelt, which is well-known for its apple orchards, and the Ziz Valley, which is well-known for its palm groves. The opportunity to observe playful monkeys in their natural environment is provided by a visit to Azrou’s cedar forests. After a beautiful drive back to Marrakech, your vacation comes to an end, and you arrive in the evening with priceless memories of your Moroccan desert adventure.

Day 1: Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Gorges [330 km]
Start your unforgettable 3-day tour from Marrakech to the Merzouga Desert with a morning pick-up from your hotel or riad. Travel through the stunning High Atlas Mountains, crossing the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters for breathtaking views of traditional Berber villages and lush valleys. Your first stop is the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Ben Haddou, a historical Kasbah that has appeared in several famous films, including Gladiator and Game of Thrones. After exploring this ancient fortress, continue through the picturesque Skoura Oasis and the Mgouna Valley, renowned for its vibrant Berber culture. End the day in the scenic Dades Valley, where you’ll spend the night in a charming local guesthouse, surrounded by stunning natural landscapes.
Day 2: Dades Gorges – Todra Gorges – Merzouga Desert [265 km]
On day two, begin your journey by driving through the breathtaking Dades Gorges, a dramatic canyon carved by the Todra River. Explore the stunning cliffs and serene surroundings before heading to the famous Todra Gorges, one of Morocco’s top natural attractions. Next, travel towards Merzouga, passing through idyllic Berber villages and lush oases. Stop in Erfoud, known for its fossil workshops, before reaching the vast Sahara Desert. In Merzouga, prepare for an unforgettable camel ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes, where you’ll experience the beauty of the desert at sunset. Spend the night at a traditional desert camp, where you can enjoy delicious Moroccan cuisine, listen to authentic Berber music around a campfire, and sleep under the stars in your private tent.
Day 3: Merzouga Desert – Nkob – Ouarzazate – Marrakech [553 km]
On the final day, wake up early to catch a spectacular sunrise over the Sahara (optional). After a traditional breakfast, you’ll have the option to return to Merzouga by camel or meet your driver for a comfortable ride back to Marrakech. The return journey takes you through remote Berber villages, including Alnif, Tazarine, and Nkob, where you’ll experience the authentic culture of southern Morocco. Stop in Ouarzazate, known as the “Gateway to the Desert”, before crossing the majestic High Atlas Mountains on your way back to Marrakech. Expect to arrive in Marrakech in the early evening, around 6pm, marking the end of this extraordinary desert adventure.
